General Description of the Programme

The training programme “Lawyer of the Future: Professional Use of Artificial Intelligence in Legal and Advocacy Practice” is a specialised short-term professional development programme designed in accordance with the standards of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and the current needs of digital transformation of the legal profession.

The programme is aimed at developing practical competencies of advocates and lawyers in the professional, ethical and secure use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in legal practice — from document and case-law analysis to automation of workflows and the development of customised AI-based solutions.

The programme is implemented within the Quality Management System of the Scientific Research Institute of Maritime and Space Law in accordance with ISO 9001 requirements.

Aim of the Programme

The aim of the programme is to provide participants with comprehensive knowledge, practical skills and ethical guidance for the professional use of artificial intelligence in legal and advocacy practice, in particular for:

  • analysing legal and procedural documents;
  • researching and systematising case law;
  • drafting legal documents;
  • modelling legal positions and counterarguments;
  • automating routine legal processes;
  • increasing the efficiency and quality of legal work while maintaining professional responsibility.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the programme, participants achieve the following learning outcomes:

Knowledge:

  • principles of artificial intelligence, machine learning and NLP in the legal domain;
  • capabilities and limitations of modern AI platforms and Legal Tech solutions;
  • ethical and legal boundaries of AI use, taking into account attorney–client privilege and personal data protection;
  • risks related to bias, errors and inaccurate AI-generated outputs.

Skills and Abilities:

  • formulate effective and structured prompts for AI systems;
  • analyse contracts, court decisions and procedural documents using AI tools;
  • prepare draft legal documents with professional quality control;
  • use AI for searching, analysing and systematising case law;
  • apply the concept of an “AI opponent” when preparing for litigation;
  • organise personal and team-based legal knowledge bases.

Competencies:

  • digital competence of a modern lawyer;
  • critical thinking when working with AI-generated results;
  • responsible and ethical use of technology in legal practice.

Target Audience and Entry Requirements

The programme is intended for advocates, practising lawyers, legal department specialists, law firm professionals and other individuals holding a higher legal education degree.

Entry requirements:

  • higher legal education;
  • basic computer and internet skills;
  • readiness to implement digital tools in professional legal activity.

Organisation of the Training Process

Training is delivered in an online format using Zoom or other equivalent platforms.

Training format includes:

  • interactive lectures with real-time demonstration of AI tools;
  • practical question-and-answer sessions;
  • analysis of real legal cases.

The maximum group size is up to 20 participants, ensuring an individual approach to each learner. All sessions are recorded, and training materials are provided to participants for further use.


Assessment and Verification of Learning Outcomes

The form of final assessment is testing.

  • the test consists of 20 questions;
  • the minimum passing score is 75%;
  • assessment is carried out using a 100-point grading scale.

Certificate of Completion

Upon successful completion of the programme, participants are issued a Certificate of Professional Development.

Each certificate bears a unique registration number in the format
LAF-YYYY-XXX
and is entered into the Certificate Register of the Scientific Research Institute of Maritime and Space Law.

  • legislation of Ukraine governing advocacy and legal practice;
  • requirements for continuing professional development of advocates;
  • ethical principles of artificial intelligence use;
  • modern academic research in the field of Legal Tech;

  • ISO 9001 requirements (Quality Management System).
